MyEnergi LifestyleTM

MyEnergi LifestyleTM shows how a typical American family can significantly reduce their electricity bills and CO2 footprint by integrating today’s smart home appliances, plug-in vehicles and solar energy. MyEnergi Lifestyle works by leveraging technology so key energy-consuming devices in a home use less energy, while also shifting energy usage to less expensive periods. At night, for example, when energy costs are lower, a smart refrigerator can perform high-energy tasks like ice making or defrosting – just as Ford’s plug-in vehicles do with recharging.

By switching to MyEnergi Lifestyle, families can cut energy costs by up to 60 percent and more than 9,000 kg of CO2 (a 55 percent reduction) saved. If every home in the U.S. were to implement these energy-saving technologies, it would be the equivalent of taking all the homes in California, New York and Texas – 32 million homes – off the power grid.

Collaborators

Key factors driving MyEnergi Lifestyle include:

  • Electric vehicles, like the all-new Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid, are more efficient and can charge during the low-cost electricity hours
  • Appliance efficiency has improved dramatically over the past decade
  • Hot water heaters are more efficient and use nighttime electricity
  • Connected appliances can use less energy during peak periods
  • Efficient, reliable and affordable rooftop solar systems enable families to generate renewable energy and save money on utility bills
  • Connected devices enable smarter use of energy
  • In addition to the energy benefits directly received from the latest product offerings from Ford, Eaton, SunPower and Whirlpool, the widespread deployment of smart meters (now in more than 40 million homes across the U.S.) enables households to take advantage of off-peak rates.

2013 MyEnergi Lifestyle Winners

For Susan Berry and her family, the last six months have been almost too good to be true. Berry, of Southern California, won her place in the MyEnergi Lifestyle program during a Katie Couric Show Mother's Day special. The show surprised Berry, who was in the studio audience, with a MyEnergi Lifestyle home retrofit that included energy-efficient appliances, solar panels and a Ford C-MAX Energi Plug-In Hybrid.

Simultaneously, Ford and the MyEnergi Lifestyle collaboration launched a nation-wide contest for another lucky family to receive a MyEnergi Lifestyle home retrofit. The winners were Ben and Lindsay Sattler of Colorado. The Sattler’s home was retrofitted in December and they turned in the keys of their 1996 Toyota Corolla in favor of a fuel-efficient Ford C-MAX Energi.

“Ben only has to fill up every two weeks now, whereas before he had to get gas every five to seven days,” Lindsay said. “Driving the C-MAX Energi has helped our pocketbooks immensely. Plus we absolutely love driving it!”

The MyEnergi Lifestyle model predicted 60 percent savings in monthly energy bills and 55 percent savings in CO2 emissions. The families have already begun to see those levels of savings. Examples of efficiencies include:

Berry Family:

  • More than $1,200 saved in annual fuel costs with their C-MAX Energi
  • Expect to save more than $300 annually from their new solar panel system; the system offsets more than 70 percent of the energy used in their home
  • More than 25 percent improvement in energy costs and CO2 due to the installation of their new energy efficient Whirlpool refrigerator

Sattler Family:

  • More than $1,200 saved in annual fuel costs with their C-MAX Energi; and expect to save an additional $95 per year by charging their C-MAX Energi during off-peak hours
  • Expect to save $135 per year with their new energy efficient Whirlpool freezer
  • The Sattlers have already begun to see an improvement in appliance efficiency of more than 60 percent. Once their solar panel system is activated, the family expects to see even more savings
